Year 2 Newsletter

November 2020

Welcome back!

We hope you have had a fantastic half term break and are ready for another busy term in Year 2. We are delighted that Miss Sorsby will be with us this half term; she is on a teaching placement from Bishop Grosseteste University.

It has been fantastic to see the children start year2 with great enthusiasm and they have already produced some fantastic pieces of work in all of our subject areas. In English, we will be learning to write a letter and our own instructions. We will be learning addition and subtraction within numbers to 100 in Maths and we will be continuing learning and conducting investigations about ‘living things and their habitats’ in Science. In RE, we will be looking at Islamic birth rituals and exploring what it means to belong to a community.

This term, we will be focusing on history and learning all about ‘Childhood Through The Ages’, this will include past and present toys, schools, homes and clothing, dating from the Victorian era until present day. We will be learning about food in Design and Technology, where we will be focusing on different types of food and developing our food preparation skills, such as chopping, grating and peeling.

Reading and Spellings

We have been really thrilled with the progress children are making in their reading. How often children read at home has been a big factor, so thank you for your ongoing support. Please remember that children should try to read for 5 to 10 minutes each day, with a focus on their word reading alongside their understanding of the text. Most children should now be on the correct level of book, but please let us know if they are finding it particularly tricky or not challenging enough. Children should also be encouraged to read their own favourite books at home as well. Please remember to record any reading experiences in their red reading records as they will be awarded house points.

We will continue to send home a list of spellings using the ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check’ sheets. Thank you for supporting your child to learn these for a short spelling check each Friday.

At the beginning of every maths lesson the children have been practising their number bonds to 20. There are different phases and when the children are able to quickly recall these they are moved onto the next phase. We will be sending out information and their current phases at some point this week so they are able to practise at home. Some of our children practised these in year 1, but for consolidation and due to some of the schooling that they have missed they have repeated some of the phases.

PE will continue to take place on a Friday afternoon with Coach Luke. Please ensure children have a suitable and clearly labelled kit for outdoor activities, including trainers and warm jumpers, especially now the colder weather is here!

Times Table Rockstars

If your child hasn’t accessed this as yet, the app is set up for Year 2 children so that they can practise their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and earn as many coins as possible!

Working together

Thank you for your support so far this year whilst we work together to secure the best possible outcomes for your child in Year 2. If you have any questions or queries, please email the school office on
